How To Wash Iron Filings

How To Wash Iron Filings & Iron Powder For Magnetic Field Displays.  To keep magnetic field line displays from getting cloudy its best to wash the iron filings or iron particles in your suspension medium first.

- Put iron filings in a jar,

- add suspension medium (Mineral oil, silicon oil, glycerine etc),

- mix well then let iron settle back down,

- use a magnet to hold the iron back & pour out dirty medium, rinse and repeat as needed,

Mineral oil 1 gallon from Tractor Supply,

CMS Iron filings from Amazon.  *Note for Mag field displays CMS Magnetics 12 oz industrial grade iron powder (not really powder but filings - there is a difference) is cleaner and requires less cleaning for a clear display. Also sold as Dowling Magnets 12 oz Jar of Iron Filings.  

Education Innovations Ince M-600 iron fillings is good for many magnetic demonstrations but requires more cleaning for this type of magnetic display.

Note this iron in this video is over a decade old and was pretty dirty and rusty before cleaning and still a little dirty afterwards.

You can buy magnetic viewing film from amazon or purchase magnetic viewing film ebay, if shopping for a magnetic field viewer.  Magnetic field display film can be used so see invisible magnetic fields.  Shop online to buy mange-view film or MV34 magnetic film or MVF0005 magnetic Film form Apex Magnets, CMS Magnets magnetic field viewing film or Magnet4less or try applied magnets.  If you dont want to purchase magnet paper just make this simple easy homemade diy version.
