What is the best solution to suspend ferrofluid in?
Well after ruining quite a bit I found that a combination of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water work well and minimize staining and degrading of ferrofluid over time. I found the less iso alcohol the more staining yet too much degrades the ferrofluid.

Material used:

- 12v computer Fan Motor,

- Hard Drive Magnet,

- 2 Cylinder magnets as spin bar (I recommend purchasing one),

- Tupperware Bowl,

- Variable Power Supply*

* Can use just about any 5-12v power supply laying around - phone or razor charger,  modem or electronics PS, etc.  Just check the voltage and amperage of the motor you intend to use and compare it to the power supply. Anything over 0.5 amps likely will work.

Best to use less voltage than you motor is rated for or your spin bar may spin too fast.  Add a voltage divider potentiometer or some other means to control speed if desired.



I plan to build a self contained unit with speed control & likely hot plate in the near future. This was just a quick build because I needed one right then.



Spin bar has since arrive in the mail and I have wired the magnetic stirrer to a 5v 1amp modem power supply and it works very well.

We tested several different UV suspensions fluids and regular suspension fluids. This fluid worked the best both as UV and suspension. Most suspension fluids we used ruined the ferrofluid immediatly. Look for future videos “How to Ruin Ferrofluid Immediately” & “How to Degrade Ferrofluid Slowly”.

Before putting the magnets in a plastic vial it was extremely difficult, almost impossible to get the magnetic fluid off of the magnets. I may try this technique on my real ferrofluid as wells.

Home made silly putty infused with natural black iron oxide Fe3O4 (30 Microns).

Three different iron oxides were tried and tested but this worked the best by far.

This video is not sped up or edited in any way. We have commercial magnet putty products that are quality and work well but nowhere near as magnetic as this putty.

(Homemade) diamagnetic levitator with an old hard drive magnet and carbon graphite elevator motor brushes used as diamagnetic plates.
Crudely and quickly made for nearly free.
You can also levitate a magnet with silver, bismuth, or pyrolytic graphite for best results.
The graphite, silver, and bismuth act as a diamagnetic and repel a magnet regardless of the polarity.
The large (dangerously powerful) hard drive magnets are used to counteract the force of gravity so a magnet can levitate freely between the diamagnet graphite.

If you drop the little metal slug down the copper tube, it falls under the pull of gravity, and drops out at the bottom, just as you would expect.But take the second, apparently identical, slug; drop it down the tube, and hey presto! the slug travels down the tube extremely slowly. You can even see it's slow passage via the window in the side of the tube.It is a great magic trick, but the truth is just as amazing. The second slug is highly magnetic. Now Michael Faraday, the British physicist, discovered as long ago as 1831 that when you pushed a bar magnet into the opening within a copper coil, an electric current was produced within the coil. This is known as electromagnetic induction.The Russian physicist Heinrich Lenz observed that the direction of the induced current in a conductor is always such as to oppose the motion which produced it.So as the magnetic slug moves down the copper tube, a series of transient "eddy currents" are induced in the copper tube, and these currents will create a magnetic field that opposes the downward motion of the slug.1
