How To Wash Iron Filings

How To Wash Iron Filings & Iron Powder For Magnetic Field Displays.  To keep magnetic field line displays from getting cloudy its best to wash the iron filings or iron particles in your suspension medium first.

- Put iron filings in a jar,

- add suspension medium (Mineral oil, silicon oil, glycerine etc),

- mix well then let iron settle back down,

- use a magnet to hold the iron back & pour out dirty medium, rinse and repeat as needed,

Education Innovations Ince M-600 iron fillings is good for many magnetic demonstrations but requires more cleaning for this type of magnetic display.

Note this iron in this video is over a decade old and was pretty dirty and rusty before cleaning and still a little dirty afterwards.

-Medium to suspend Iron particles:

Can use oils including mineral oil, baby oil, silicon oil, castor oil etc, syrups, corn syrup, Karo syrup, Honey, Glycerins or any viscous clear liquid.

-Iron particles:

Iron filings or iron oxide powder (magnetite). 

Its best to pre wash the iron and different brands have different purities and cleanliness - see our video on washing and brands.

-UV reactive liquid or UV highlighter if you want your display to glow. *Note UV may not mix with all you suspension mediums like oils.

We are in the process of building a large magnetic field line viewer specifically for this Levitron to view the field lines of a large ring magnet.

Magnetic Field Line Viewers - Modified

A look at some Magnetic Field Line Demonstrators.

One commercially purchased 3D Magnet Field Viewer was modified by adding mineral oil to help suspend the iron filings.

The other Magnet Viewer has homemade with a viscous clear suspension fluid but became cloudy.

I have since learned to wash the iron filings in your suspension fluid to reduce cloudiness. These are both over a decade, old made around 2004.

There are several ways to see magnetic lines or how to see magnetic fields.  You can purchase magnetic field viewing film online, purchase a 3d magnetic field viewer (3d magnetic field demonstrator) or purchase other means to view magnetic lines.  If you do not want to make a purchase online a magnetic field viewer you can easily see magnetic lines of force or magnetic flux lines by making a homemade diy magnetic field viewer.  You can easily make a magnet field viewer with oil (or any carrier that won’t rust) and iron filings.  diy magnetic viewers are cheap and easy to make.  You can also buy commercial magnetic field viewers for a low price online and add oil to make it a 3d magnet viewer for a cheap price - see our video on how to convert a standard 3d viewer into a oil carrier diy 3d viewer.

Seeing magnetic fields with magnetic field viewing film or magnetic field viewing paper is easy if you purchase a magnetic viewing film online.  Magnetic viewer film or magnetic viewer paper can be bought online cheap if you search for a coupon code or search best price for magnetic viewer film.  You will need strong neodymium magnets. You can also build a diy magnetic field viewer or 3d Magnetic field demonstrator.

Also search how to see magnetic fields or how to see magnet flux line or view magnetic field tool for some more magnet viewing ideas. 

Some cool commercially available magnetic field line viewers I have seen online for sale: Jumbo magnetic lines of force demonstrator 3-d, Magnetic field viewer film, magnetic lines of force, view magnetic field tool- magnetic field demonstrator, filing viewer or iron filing viewer.  You can also purchase different sizes of magnet film like magnetic viewing film 3 inch x 3 inch, a small magnetic field viewing card, or magnetic viewing film - magnetic field display film. display film 6” x 6”.   Magnetic forces exploration kit or magnet field kit.  Magnet source magnetic field viewer card and or some green magnetic viewing film or dowling magnetics mysterious magnet tube and add oil.  Search online to purchase iron filings in plastic case and just drill and add oil. industrial grade iron powder can be used to make a diy magnetic field viewing tool or dowling magnets iron filings, science magnets iron filings for magnetic fields.  Learning resources iron filings set or make your own buy purchasing iron filings - 1 pound package.  My next diy magnetic viewer will be built by adding oil to a westminster magnetic sand timer or hand-blown glass sand timer magnet magnetic hourglass.  Arbor scientific has large magnetic field viewer film 9 x 7.2 inch and magnetic field observation box and also a magnetic field model along with a magnetic field observation window kit which are all pretty cool science demonstrations.  Look for 2D magnetic field viewers and learn how to use magnetic field viewer film.

I also have a hand general tools amy6 magnetic tester - magnetic polarity tester as well as a cams magnetics magnetic pole detector along with a diy homemade magnetic polarity tester made will a hall effect sensor.

Our variation of the classic magnetic levitator. This is accomplished with permanent magnets, no electromagnets.

That would make a frictionless no point of contact free axle which we intend to use for a Mendocino Motor, Magnet Motor, etc.

As Earnshaw's Theorem states, its impossible to levitate a magnet over another.  However its almost certainly possible to levitate a magnet or an array of magnets over another magnet or array or configuration.

Our variation of the classic magnet ring levitator toy.  While this is a fun fascinating magnetic demonstration, the magnetic principal employed here has many profound real world uses.  This is accomplished with permanent magnets, no electromagnets.

Materials List:

Strong Magnet (hard drive magnet)

Diamagnetic Material (Motor Brush)

Small Magnet (toothbrush head magnet)

Spacers (pennies)

Bolt for adjustment

Non-Magnetic Housing (aluminum sheet metal)

Can use wood for housing, any axial pole magnets and other diamagnetic material including:

Pyrolytic Graphite,

Bismuth,

Pencil Lead,

Silver,

and maybe more.

Diamagnetic materials create an induced magnetic field in a direction opposite to an externally applied magnetic field, and are repelled by the applied magnetic field. In contrast, the opposite behavior is exhibited by paramagnetic materials. Diamagnetism is a quantum mechanical effect that occurs in all materials; when it is the only contribution to the magnetism the material is called a diamagnet. Unlike a ferromagnet, a diamagnet is not a permanent magnet. Its magnetic permeability is less than μ₀, the permeability of vacuum. In most materials diamagnetism is a weak effect, but a superconductor repels the magnetic field entirely, apart from a thin layer at the surface.

This seemingly impossible diy modified magnetic toy attracts both the north and south poles of another magnet and locks the other magnet in place acting like an invisible spring on both sides of the magnet.

While this is a very cool science magnetic demonstration which helps children get interested in science, it also has many real world applications and will likely be seen in many products in the near future.

So is Earnshaw’s Theorem wrong?

Not in this example because the rod is a contact point.

In the near future a device will seemingly defy Earnshaw’s Theorem and the theorem will be reinterpreted to account for the exception.  Similar to how the “Levitron” was considered impossible.

Running a Hard Drive Motor with an ESC (BLDC HD Motor)

Running an old Brushless DC (BLDC) Hard Drive Motor with a ESC, RC electronic speed control.

These are decades old hard drives with large aluminum platers that I have been meaning to spin up for years to do some magnetic projects.  I have larger older 2 GB server drives I plan to spin up next to make a magnetic levitator.

Hard Drive Motors are Brushless DC Motors (BLDC Motor) which are 3 phase motors.

BLDC Brushless DC motors can be sensored or sensorless BLDC.  These hard drive BLDC motors are sensorless.

The Hard Drive Motors are being driven by an RC ESC (Electronic Speed Control) powered by a regulated power supply and controlled by a servo controller  but could be an RC transmitter and receiver as well.
